Neglected dog’s recovery inspires hope at Brakpan SPCA

After disappearing from a Brakpan property, Vida was found in Benoni and is now thriving under the care of the SPCA.

Vida, the neglected dog who was rescued by the Brakpan SPCA in Benoni following her disappearance from a property in Brakpan, is on the road to recovery.

As previously reported by the Brakpan Herald, Vida, whose name means “life”, was found over the Freedom Day long weekend.

This followed her disappearance from a local property after SPCA inspectors responded to a complaint at the address.

During this initial visit, inspectors discovered Vida in a severely neglected state.

After carrying out the necessary legal procedures and issuing instructions to the owner, they returned the next day to assess Vida’s condition, only to find she was no longer on the premises.

The owner allegedly refused to disclose the whereabouts of the dog, and the society subsequently opened a criminal case.

A search followed, led by Brakpan SPCA inspector Mariska Venter, and Vida was rescued after being tracked down in Benoni.

According to a recent update from the SPCA, while Vida is still underweight, she is steadily improving with proper nutrition.

There is also visible progress in her recovery, with the SPCA noting improvements not only in her condition but also her spirit.

“Every day, Vida is learning that human hands can bring kindness, not just harm. She is standing taller and feeling stronger,” the society stated.

“To every single person who donated toward Vida’s veterinary care and recovery, thank you.

“You are the reason she is alive and thriving today. You didn’t just give money, you gave her a second chance at a life worth living.”

The SPCA noted that while Vida is a success story, she also serves as a reminder of the many other animals still in need of care.

“She represents the hundreds of animals currently in our care who still need that same “turnaround”,” the society stated.

“The Brakpan SPCA remains in a precarious financial position. We are sharing these stories not just to celebrate, but to show you exactly what is at stake.

“Without this branch, where would dogs like Vida go? We need to stay open. We need to keep fighting. Please help us keep these success stories coming.”
