Scholar patrol training equips Dalpark Independent School learners with traffic safety skills
The initiative focused on safe road crossing, traffic regulation and protecting learners in school zones.
Brakpan police and EMPD members conducted scholar patrol training on May 20 at Dalpark Independent School to promote safer roads and responsible behaviour among learners.
The training was organised by Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi and orchestrated by EMPD members with the intention of instilling awareness of road safety, facilitating safe crossing, regulating traffic, and promoting the protection, development, and well-being of school children.
They were joined by CPF Sector One chairperson Simon Mabuse.
According to Buthelezi, the training was also aimed at reducing the risk of accidents at schools by teaching learners responsible behaviour and adherence to traffic rules.

“Scholar patrol training is a common approach essential for enhancing the safety of children in their school vicinity. It is a vital component of road safety education, which regulates traffic,” she said.
“The learners become visible ambassadors for the school, and encourage other learners to observe safety rules.”
Eight scholar patrol learners were trained on traffic control, assisting pedestrians, the importance of pedestrian crossings and how to react when officers pass while they are on patrol duty.
“School management appreciated the initiative and efforts of the SAPS and EMPD. Learners were thankful and excited throughout the training session,” added Buthelezi.
