Gauteng Traffic Police arrests suspects and recovers stolen vehicles

Authorities say the operations form part of efforts to strengthen crime prevention and improve community safety.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety commended the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) for their coordinated efforts in arresting 107 suspects and recovering 57 stolen as well as hijacked vehicles during the different operations conducted across the province.

The department stated that the arrests and recovery of the vehicles occurred during the operations conducted by the Special Law Enforcement Unit (SLEU) and Saturation Unit between May 28 and July 9.

According to the department, 41 suspects were arrested in the City of Ekurhuleni and the Sedibeng District Municipality for crimes including drug dealing, possession of copper, suspected stolen property, possession of unlicensed live ammunition, fraud, possession of illegal mining tools and contravention of the immigration act.

The department shared that this happened during the operations conducted in Elsburg, Tembisa North, Ivory Park, Katlehong, Vereeniging, Sedibeng and Orange Farm.

The department said that in the City of Tshwane, 15 suspects were arrested for pointing a firearm, assault GBH, armed robbery, housebreaking and possession of dagga, of which 160kg was confiscated during this period.

The department added that the operations were conducted in Rietgat, Mabopane, Soshanguve, Mamelodi East, Pretoria North and Queenswood.

The department explained that 45 suspects were arrested in the City of Johannesburg for assault GBH, armed robbery, possession of ammunition and dangerous weapons, theft and undocumented persons, amongst other crimes.

The department added that two stolen vehicles, including a Toyota Fortuner and a Toyota Yaris, were recovered within the city. The operations targeted Johannesburg, Jabulani, Eldorado Park, Dobsonville and Doornkop.

“The Gauteng Department of Community Safety commends the Gauteng Traffic Police for their unwavering dedication in safeguarding communities across the province.

“These successful operations demonstrate the provincial government’s commitment to intensify the fight against crime and build safer communities for all,” noted the department.

The department has urged residents to remain vigilant and continue working with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious behaviour and criminal activity to their nearest police station.
