The Bold and Brave Foundation, a Brakpan youth-led non-profit organisation, held a beauty pageant in Brenthurst on September 19, where local talent and health education took centre stage.

Brakpan police formed part of the event. The foundation’s team of young women is guided and mentored by Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“Social crime prevention is not about waiting for crime to happen and then reacting. It is about building a safer future before danger arrives,” said Buthelezi.

Buthelezi works hand in hand with schools, community leaders, and families to identify risks early, spotting the signs of vulnerability before they turn into trouble.

“Creating a safer space where young people can learn, grow, and express themselves without fear, and offering mentorship by guiding youth towards positive choices, education, and skills development,” she said.

On the panel of judges for the pageant were Brakpan SAPS Vispol support head Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad, Constable Xiluva Rabedzwa, and Rene Combrick.

Warrant Officer Fikile Zitha from the Brakpan SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit addressed the youngsters about women’s safety and the important role every individual has in helping to create safer communities.

The foundation’s founder and chairperson, Tumelo Buthelezi, addressed the audience with a short but meaningful speech on women’s health, focusing on educating the young women about understanding their bodies, taking care of themselves, and recognising the importance of prioritising their health.

Live performances by young members of the community and a professional local DJ brought the event to life when they each showcased incredible talents.

Local entrepreneurs were also invited to sell food, snacks, and cold drinks at the venue.

“Mentorship is not just about telling young people what to do. It is about walking the journey with them.

“The SAPS social crime prevention coordinator becomes a role model who shows that discipline, respect, and service are powerful life values,” said Buthelezi.

“The social crime prevention coordinator serves as a bridge that connects youth to opportunities in education, sports, and community service, and the shield that protects the youth from influences of gangs, drugs, and violence.

“Young girls were given a sense of hope for a brighter future. The nine contestants regained self-confidence and now believe in themselves.

“Every youth who attended the event went home inspired and eager to grab the next opportunity.”

Brakpan police believe that the future of the youth is worth protecting and that young people should not be afraid to dream bigger than their circumstances.

Local police further urge local businesses and community members to support youth development initiatives.

“If we invest in our youth today, we will not need to fear for our streets tomorrow,” said Buthelezi.

“And if we mentor with patience, lead with integrity, and serve with compassion, we will raise a generation that chooses peace over violence, respect over fear, and unity over division.

“The SAPS badge is more than authority. It is a promise to protect, guide, and inspire.”
