Ekurhuleni Talks, the mouthpiece of the metro in this August edition boasts that Ekurhuleni has been declared the greenest city in South Africa.
Quoting: “The competition initially started as the cleanest town competition, focusing on implementing the national waste management strategy and looking at principles of reducing, recycling and reusing waste materials.
The two towns, namely Brakpan where I work, and Benoni where I live, must have been sidelined in the inspection since the CBD’s of both towns have deteriorated.
Lights do not function, there is filth in the streets, blocked drains, street signs knocked over, open holes on the pavements, which you can fall into and get badly hurt in.
Councillors and municipal managers should be taken to task for these atrocious conditions in our towns, and not to be patted on the back to show how effective they are.
We know and see better than that.
