Pollution from squatter camp is making us ill

Lorraine Nel writes via looklocal: I am sure this must be one of thousands of letters received regarding the plastic squatter camp, but action needs to be taken very soon.

The pollution is bad — from late afternoon one can actually see the smoke hanging over Brakpan Central.

I go past the squatter camp twice a day, to work and back in Apex, and have done so for the past 26 years.

I cannot even remember how it looked before this mess happened.

I often think how nice it would have been to have a lovely park there, like the people abroad have to at least enjoy when driving past.

It is really bad the way it’s looking now.

In the late afternoon they start burning stuff and the smoke is so bad that we actually cannot even sleep with our windows open during the night.

If we sleep with the window closed, both my husband and I wake up with headaches.

When we wake up in the morning there is no morning freshness at all, just the bad smell of whatever they burn during the night.

We have also been struggling with very bad sinusitis, so much so that we have been coughing day and night, literally, for months now.

We have been back to the doctor on a number of occasions, for more and more medication, with no success at all, we stay sick.

I am convinced that this is as a result of the pollution.

I know this matter has been brought up on a number of occasions, even in the newspaper, but absolutely nothing is being done about this; in fact it’s getting worse and worse.

We need a person to start taking action and toget this matter sorted, for the sake and wellbeing of all the residents in the area.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
