On Friday, last week, I had to take time off work to go to the Brakpan Police Station charge office to write out an affidavit to the effect that my wheelie bin has been stolen.
Brakpan residents pay for the bins on their municipal accounts.
When I applied for my bin, I applied for one and my account reflects the charge for one.
However, since my bin was taken, my garbage hasn’t been removed, but I’m still paying for the refuse removal service.
So, affidavit in hand, I went through to the municipal centre for the bins and asked for a new one.
I loaded my bin in the car and drove straight to the hardware store, where I bought some white paint, and went home.
At home, I attached a small grinding stone to my drill and proceeded to mark my street address into three sides of the bin, and then painted it white.
This morning, January 14, I put my garbage in the bin and put it out on the pavement.
My bin was stolen!
There are unscrupulous bin thieves who have multiple bins and are obviously not paying for them.
I don’t know whose ”clever” idea this was at the local municipal offices, but I foresaw this theft of wheelie bins and refuse to empower the further theft of mine.
I will, henceforth, leave my garbage on the grounds of the Brakpan Municipality.
The Brakpan Customer Care Centre website provides no means of laying a complaint, so ”Customer Care” in name only.
