Give food and not money
D Groenewald writes by e-mail: I would just like to let the residents know that the woman who begs at the robot in Dalview, on the corner of Springs Road and Farquaharson Road (near the Shell Garage), buys cigarettes with the money we give her.

Her husband and older son sit and smoke on the grass near where she begs.
Her other children sit around there all day in their school uniforms.
Can anybody offer this man a job, or doesn’t he want to work?
He does not appear to be disabled and it is probably just convenient for him to get his wife to beg in order for him to smoke and relax all day.
I do not know the family’s circumstances, but what future do the children have when they are brought up to believe that begging is normal?
They will become our future beggars.
The other woman and her husband who beg at the VC Spar, and the woman, her daughter and son who beg at the robots at the Mall@Carnival are also becoming such a pain.
I can help them once in a while, but it is not possible to give them a donation every time I visit the mall.
I will, in future, only give food and, maybe, if we can all donate food to a food bank or to a charity, all these beggars will disappear off the streets.
They always indicate that they only want money for food, so let’s give them food only. Not money for cigarettes and alcohol.
