Great start for ‘Panne’

Brakpan Rugby Club got their Assupol Club Series off to a great start on Saturday, February 15, and the club as a whole performed well against Pretoria Police away from home.

The club’s First XV won 35-10, the Second XV won 37-14, the u-21 team won 31-20 while the u-20 team lost 45-0.

In the first team encounter, it was flanker Wikus van der Berg, centre Albert Truitsman, fly-half Gido Horn and scrumhalf Shaun Botes, who scored the tries, while Horn kicked over the remaining 15 points.

Brakpan’s eighth man, Theo Mynhardt, and loosehead prop Vernon du Preez also stood out on the day.

The highlight of the day was the performance of the Brakpan u-21 team who came from behind to beat a strong Pretoria Police team filled with players from the Blue Bulls Academy.

“The coaches, Thys Nieuwenhuis and Riaan Nelm, and team manager Jaco van Wyk can be extremely proud of this team and all their efforts,” said club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“They were 17-0 behind after 20 minutes, and it took some great play and serious commitment to pull through and win, especially in Pretoria.

“Once the forwards took control over the massive forwards of Pretoria Police, our backline came to the party and the scored some great tries.

“This team is going places this year,” added the chairman.

The club will play North West University (Pukke) in two week’s time, at Bosman Stadium in the Assupol competition, on Saturday, February 28.
