Cyclists conquer the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic

The 31st edition of the Carnival City Macsteel National Cycle Classic took place from Carnival City, on Sunday, February 22.

This year’s event, organised by Germiston Wheelers with the assistance of the Germiston Rotary Club and Rotary Anns, focused on improved safety for the riders and, despite a few crashes along the route, a successful race was held.

Weather conditions on the morning were ideal for cycling, but, by 8am, the wind picked up.

The route follows a figure of 8, so riders were guaranteed a headwind and cross winds from both directions, as well as a favourable tail wind.

JC Nel, of Team Bonitas, was the overall winner of the 165km men’s elite race, while Kim Le Court, of Bestmed, won the women’s elite race.

At 165km, this event is one of the longest on the cycling calendar for elite and u-23 men, and at 125km, the veteran men and juniors also have one of the longer races.

The top five finishers in the main men’s elite race are:1 JC Nel 3:53:18, 2 Shaun-Nick Bester 3:53:19, 3 Bradley Potgieter 3:53:24, 4 Tyler Day 3:53:56, 5 Simphiwe Mhlakaza 3:54:41.
