‘Panne’ pulverise students at Bosman

A powerful Brakpan Rugby Club first XV welcomed a North West University (NUW) Vaal team to Bosman Stadium, on Saturday, February 28, in an Assupol Club Series encounter.

After fending off the challenge of Pretoria Police, a fortnight prior to Saturday’s clash, captain Francois “Bones” Robbertse’s men proved why they are perhaps the best club team not featuring in this year’s ongoing Cell C Community Cup (the country’s elite club rugby tournament).

It seems though that ‘Panne’ have put last season’s disappointment of not qualifying for the Community Cup behind them and the team is certainly looking like a powerful outfit in this Assupol Series.

The Brakpan first team went over the NWU Vaal try line on eight occasions and stormed to a 52-13 victory on Saturday.

The foundation of their victory was the fact that the Brakpan pack made mincemeat of the students’ scrum, while dominating in the line-outs as well.

The famous Brakpan rolling mauls, formed from the strong line-out possession, contributed to a number of their eight tries.

Flanker Shaun Rheeder was named Man of the Match for his excellent all-round play.

From attack, to defence, to groundwork, Rheeder was strong in all aspects of his game.

Brakpan play Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria, on Saturday, March 7.

They were on the receiving-end of a 71-0 hammering by NWU in their encounter, so Brakpan is expected to make light work of their weekend opponents.

Brakpan’s try-scorers were Thinus Ueckermann, Albert Trytsman, Theo Becker, Wikus van Der Berg, Dean van der Merwe, Jason Arundle, Kyle Hilton and Tobie Strydom.

  • In other results on the day, the club’s u-21 side narrowly lost 24-21 to NWU and will be striving to make it up when they meet again in the final at Loftus in Pretoria on March 14.
Brakpan’s Second XV won 15-0 and the club’s u-20 team was thrashed 40-0.
