Brothers are ones to watch

Sherwood Gardens residents and brothers JP Buys (18) and Martin Joubert (24) are making a name for themselves in the fast-growing sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Both fought at Fightstar 11, in Primrose, an event that showcased the talents of upcoming MMA amateur fighters.

In Primrose, on Saturday, February 28, Joubert met namesake Nico Joubert in a bantamweight fight, in the hexagon.

His opponent stood absolutely no chance as the elder of the brothers sent him to the canvas with a powerful kick, a mere nine seconds into the first round.

Buys, who has featured in the Herald on numerous occasions in the past for his wrestling achievements, appeared on the main card at Fightstar 11, in a bantamweight title fight against JP van der Merwe.

The young fighter claimed the title after winning via submission, in the second round.

A full time professional career as a MMA fighter now looks like an absolute certainty for Buys, and he is on the cards to fulfil a dream and make his EFC debut in the lighter flyweight division, in the not too distant future, while Joubert is striving to win five more fights in the amateur ranks, in order to turn professional.

According to Buys, the brothers have a similar fighting style, possibly attributable to their wrestling backgrounds.

“We both like going to the ground and dominating the opposition,” he told the Herald.

Buys trains out of the renowned Fight Fit Militia gym, in Sunninghill, while Joubert trains at Sabre Tooth gym, in Boksburg.

Joubert will be fighting at the next Fightstar event, on May 2.

The brothers thanked their sponsors, as well as their family, friends and fans for all their valued support.
