Cedars seal World Cup berth at Bosman

The second leg of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup qualifiers, played at Brakpan’s Bosman Stadium again, ended in disappointment for the South African Rhinos against the Lebanon Cedars.

The encounter ended at 50-16 in favour of the Lebanese team (90-28 on aggregate) who, in turn, earned qualification for the 2017 World Cup.

Cedars winger Travis Robinson, as he did in the first leg, ran in another hat trick of tries, while second-rower Elias Sukker put in a man-of-the-match performance.

They led 28-6 at the halftime break, with South Africa’s only try in the half coming from winger Gideon Mazembe.

Lebanon would thrill their large contingent of fans at the match and add four tries to the five scored in the first half.

Rupert Wells (in the 54th minute) and Marcell Viljoen (in the 76th minute) scored two four-pointers for the Rhinos in the second stanza, but that was all they could muster as it was the Lebanese who were left celebrating in Brakpan.
