Sasolburg show no gas against ‘Panne’
It was not a cricket match, but you may be forgiven for thinking that it was one, considering the score in Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV’s opening 2016 Valke Peregrine League encounter.
On Saturday, March 5, the “Panne” welcomed league newcomers Sasolburg to Bosman Stadium for the first clash of the new club rugby campaign.
The men in green handed out a hiding that saw their opponents spending the majority of the time in their match behind the poles in a 103-3 defeat.
The forwards totally dominated in all facets and the back-line received so much ball that they went over the whitewash on 12 of the 15 total occasions.
Winger Leon “Sweef” Potgieter was back to his free scoring ways of the last campaign with four tries to his name, while centre Christo Joubert and eighthman Raymond Herron each dotted down twice.
JP Snyman, Gido Horn, Thinus Ueckermann, Tobie Strydom, Duane Morrison, Dirk Odendaal and Ronwin Roets all contributed with five-pointers of their own.
Fly-half Horn converted 14 of the tries to take his overall points tally from the match to 33.
Harry Nieuwenhuis , chairman of Brakpan Rugby Club, said: “We feel that our team is more than ready for the new season, and especially for the Gold Cup, which is coming up later in the year.”
Meanwhile, the club’s “Lilywhites” (second XV) enjoyed a 22-7 win against Sasolburg, while the u-21 side went against all expectations to lose 19-13.
“They will have to work extremely hard if they want to qualify for the u-21 Gold Cup,” commented Nieuwenhuis.
The Brakpan teams will welcome Nigel to Bosman Stadium on Saturday.
