Bartlett goes to Georgia

Brakpan Wrestling Club’s Matthew Bartlett wrestled at the Cadet World Championships in Georgia last week.

Bartlett, a pupil at Hoërskool Stoffberg, performed a lot better this year in comparison to last year and earned himself a 21st place in his category among participants from 52 countries in the event.

The highlight for him was the “More Than Medals” camp that was hosted by United World Wrestling in Georgia after the championship where 40 of the world’s top cadet wrestlers assembled at Georgia’s Olympic Training Centre in Borjomi.

There they worked with Georgia’s top senior wrestlers and coaches to refine their technique and were taught to analyse opponents’ matches to improve their own performance.

The young wrestler also rubbed shoulders with 2016’s 125kg Olympic bronze medal winner Geno Petriashvili, 57kg Olympic gold medallist Vladimer Khinchegashvili and Georgian wrestler Eldar Kurtanidze (a two-time world champion and double bronze medal winner at the Olympics).
