Junior golfers awarded for progress

Kenneth Dube praised his juniors and told the Herald that there is some extremely exciting talent emerging from the Brakpan-based club.

Royal Oak Country Club’s 2016 Junior Club Championships took place on Thursday, December 8, to mark the conclusion of a busy year for the club’s junior golfers who play out of the Kenneth Dube Golf Academy.

An annual prize-giving took place after the tournament for those youngsters who excelled in their written exams on the rules of golf as well as those who shone on the greens and fairways this year.

“I firmly believe that when you teach young golfers they need to be fully aware of the rules of the game.

“Without the rules there is no sport.

“There are a lot of very good young players who could go far, but their lack of knowledge of the rules lets them down.”

Dube praised his juniors and told the Herald that there is some extremely exciting talent emerging from the Brakpan-based club.

He also praised Impala Platinum for its ongoing support of development golf at Royal Oak.

The company has sponsored and affiliated 13 junior golfers so that they can compete on the regional junior league circuit in 2017.

Awards went to:

• Year-end exam first positions: Taytan Kordom and Philip Roets.

• Year-end exam second positions: Keabetswe Moloto, Joshua Oelofse and Caitlin Ferguson.

• Most Improved Junior for 2016: Taytan Kordom.

• Most Promising Junior Golfer: Caitlin Ferguson.

• Order of Merit winner: Stephen Nel.

• Best Junior Golfer for 2016: Christy Raper.

• Overall tournament winners: Mzwakhe Nkomo and Tinus Oosthuysen.
