The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

Popular local kickboxing and MMA instructors Raymond Phillips and son Ryan (both Brakpan residents) have taken thing one step higher – literally.

The younger Phillips has taken a page out of his father’s book by taking up skydiving.

Raymond has been skydiving for the past 15 years while Ryan has just completed his Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) progression course.

“Ryan is no stranger to skydiving because of my involvement over the years,” said Raymond.

“He did a tandem skydive when he was just 13 years old.

“I am extremely confident he is getting the best instruction under Kevin Owen, who did his first jump course 15 years ago and Ralph Ridge, owner of Skydive-On-The-Vaal in Deneysville, who is internationally respected.

“Being in the fighting world gives you a different look on the world and life, but leaping into the blue sky for the first time gives you a greater appreciation for the vastness, magnitude and beauty of the world.

“It is a freedom that very few people will ever experience because at that moment all your burdens just don’t matter.

“Many people ask why we do this and I always reply that ‘you can’t explain it until you have tried it’.

“Skydive-On-The-Vaal is our skydiving home away from home.

“We are a bunch of girls and boys sharing experiences and having fun in the sky.

“If skydiving is on your bucket list, give it a shot.”
