Seamers shine in win over Actonville

The team will travel to Bedfordview Country Club on February 25 for their next league encounter against Bedfordview.

Brakpan’s United Cricket Club got the Premier League One portion of the 2017/2018 Eastern Cricket Union campaign off to the best possible start when they headed to Actonville to play Actonville Spurs on February 19.

This weekend saw the start of the split Premier League One and Premier League Two competitions where the top eight Premier League teams battle it out in Premier League One and the bottom four teams play the top four Promotion League sides in Premier League Two.

On Sunday, United skipper Justin Gamble lost the coin toss and was asked to bowl first, a move that would prove to be a good one as United’s first three seam bowlers ran riot at Lords Cricket Grounds.

Opening bowlers Ruan Janse van Rensburg and Rynard de Lange were fantastic up front.

They were ably backed up by first change seamer Peter Trewick.

The trio linked up well to have the Actonville batting order in all kinds of trouble.

Janse van Rensburg (3/28 in 10 overs), Trewick (3/28 in seven overs) and de Lange (2/15 in six overs) proved too good for Actonville who were all out in the 26th over with a mere 76 runs on the scoreboard.

United would feel confident chasing such a low score, but it proved to be more challenging than anticipated as the visitors lost five wickets in their reply with the willow.

It was Branden Grutter, opening the batting, who would lead the way, blasting 41 runs from 36 deliveries (four fours and two sixes) that would get United to the target and victory.

“It was pretty much the perfect start to the top eight for us,” said Gamble.

“Ruan and Rynard were superb with the ball and well backed up by Peter.

“We probably could have been more clinical with the bat and won by eight or nine wickets but all in all it was the perfect start.”
