United hope to do better next time

Every player but the captain failed to show up to the races as the team were manhandled by their Boksburg opponents on home turf.

Despite the best efforts of their skipper Justin Gamble, it just wasn’t to be for Brakpan’s United Cricket Club’s Premier League XI when they hosted second-placed CBC Old Boys from Boksburg at Hosking Park on January 27.

CBC’s captain Casey Arnold won the morning coin toss and elected to bowl first, a move which paid off for his team as his bowlers ran rampant.

Despite a gritty 55 runs from Gamble, the team could not surpass the 100-run mark as they were toppled for just 98 runs in 32.3 overs.

They would need something special to defend that low score, but that was not be for United.

CBC, despite losing two wickets (both picked up by Gamble), managed to surpass United’s target within 20 overs to end the host team’s chance of securing a top six position in the league.

With the 12-team competition splitting in two between the top and the bottom half in a fortnight’s time, the club now founds themselves among the bottom dwellers in the lower tier of the competition.

Gamble said: “We were simply not good enough again.

“We are now not able to make it in the top six so it is disappointing that will be playing in the bottom six for the second round.

“On Sunday, we lost the toss and were sent in to bat.

“Credit must go to CBC who bowled really well.

“We will just have to focus on getting combinations right and look towards building for next season because we are a much better team than we have shown this season.

“We will look to top the bottom six table at the end of this season and strive to move forward from there.”

They will play a postponed fixture against Springs Old Boys at Hosking Park on Sunday before the league splits the following weekend.
