Get revved up for racing action

The ever-popular annual Speed Weekend event takes place at Brakpan’s Rock Raceway this weekend (August 9 and 10).

This year the entries are from all over South Africa and includes the 2019 Hotrod world champion, Robert McDonald.

Friday’s racing will kick off with practice starting at 9am with qualifying at 4pm and racing at 5.30pm.

The action will include Maxterino Ninja Midgets, 125 Karts, Super Saloons and Formula N Circuit racing. Saturday will see newly crowned McDonald, from Scotland, in action as he will be making a guest appearance in a Mazda Rotary powered Tigra from Renegade Racing.

The world champion can expect stiff opposition from Seef Fourie Jnr and Frans Joubert who have locked out the front row at all three events held in 2019, as they will look to use their vast circuit knowledge to their benefit.

Rudy Myburgh has won all three previous Tour events staged at Rock Raceway and with a new power plan will be pushing for top honours, while Jason Loosemore, fresh from a very successful outing in the 2L Hotrod World Championships, will be trying to avenge his 2018 result where he came second to Myburgh.

Amos Cockeram has been knocking on the fringes of a top three result and after his recent success at Rock Raceway, where he won the Rockmania Hotrod Challenge, will be buoyed with that success.

Heath Bent is dominating the Pro-Am class and will be doing his best to retain the status quo, although he can expect stiff opposition from WF Weideman, Okkert Brits and 15-year-old Keogan Maartens.

Dick Hillard makes his frequent pilgrimage from the UK to campaign his South African car in a series that he has supported for over two years now.

World Champion INEX Legends superstar Devin Robertson makes a guest appearance to the class as he revisits his motorsport roots, while 2.1L Saloon Legend Gerhard Koekemoer makes a welcome acquisition to this class.

A mixture of naturally aspirated and turbo piston engines, along with their noisy Mazda Rotary counterparts, makes for a thrilling variety of race cars on offer with competitors travelling from abroad to take part in the event.

British Touring Car Championship star Matt Simpson will be on the sidelines to support McDonald in his quest to be the first world champion to conquer the South Africans at the Speed Weekend.

Saturday’s proceedings will feature the following racing categories: Comer Ninja Midgets, Standard Midgets, Stockrods, 1660 Modified Saloons, 2L Hotrods and the fourth round of the National Hotrod Tour.

Gates open at 8.30am with practice from 9am. Qualifying is at 3pm and racing starts at 5pm.
