Spurs working towards season

The Brakpan League kicks off in the first week of February while the ELFA’s dates are yet to be confirmed.

After a year of no action Brakpan Spurs players are happy to just kick the ball around at practice.

The football club has been slowly getting back into the swing of things with practice sessions focused on fitness.

They are preparing for the 2021 season which will see them playing in the new Brakpan League and the traditional Easterns Local Football Association (ELFA) League.

The Brakpan League kicks off in the first week of February while the ELFA’s dates are yet to be confirmed.

Captain Jabulani Munemo is upbeat about their upcoming season despite not having all the players back yet.

“Not all our players have come back yet but hopefully next week the younger guys will be around as schools will be closed,” he said.

Even though the club has not played any matches this year, Munemo feels their fitness levels are shaping up.

“I think 80 per cent of the players are fit. I’m excited by these players, especially the young ones,” said the captain.

The team is training at Heaytile Stadium as they are still waiting for the go-ahead from the City of Ekurhuleni with regards to the use of their regular home at the Charl Baard Stadium.

Munemo knows that they cannot use Heaytile forever as the ELFA will not approve it for matches.

“We are following all the Covid-19 regulations but I don’t know if we have been talking to the right people. I think I will go to the metro’s offices to talk them. Hopefully we’ll have a clearer picture next week,” said the skipper.

For now, Spurs continues to do its light training.

“We will take a break for three weeks over the Christmas period and then harder training from the second week of January,” said Munemo.
