Spartans karateka excel at Nationals

Our local Spartans karate club again held Carletonville's name high.

Four fighters from the Spartans Karate Dojo in Carletonville showed their skill at the South African National Championships in Durban.

According to the public relations officer, Martin Venter, the event happened at Tongaat Sports Centre over the weekend of 5 April.

“The competition was stiff, especially as it was away in KwaZulu-Natal, and we had to battle against their hometown advantage,” says Venter.

The Spartans members were part of the Gauteng provincial team and represented the province. They earned their provincial colours, which the official Gauteng sports council will bestow upon them.

The athletes performed exceptionally well, bringing back four gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

Dylan Venter competed in the under 45kg boys kumite (fighting) category, winning the silver medal.

Rochelle Seitz competed in the over 52kg girls’ kumite and brought home bronze.

Tsaka Pohotona competed in the 16 to 17-year-old male kumite division and placed in the top 14 countrywide.

Lourens Seitz competed in the 16- to 17-year-old male kumite division, placing in the top eight nationally.

The instructor of Spartans Karate, Sensei Enzo Pillay, is also a provincial coach and represented the province at the event. Gauteng Karate walked off as the best team in the country.

“The competition is the toughest of the year, with the best eight competitors from each province participating. Spartans Karate managed to achieve its best-ever result at the Nationals and subsequently had seven of its members chosen to represent South Africa,” concluded Venter.
