Single quarters a nightmare for neighbours

Residents living around the Sibanye-Stillwater single quarters at the corner of Impala Drive and Blesbok Street in Carletonville complain that the behaviour of some of these employees is not only bothersome but could even endanger lives.

According to an anonymous resident, the weekend after Youth Day was particularly rough. They had to call the CPF and the police for help that Saturday after the hostel residents held a party on the sidewalk.
They also lit fires in the front garden of the single quarters and drank in public.
The unhappy neighbour says the number of people driving under the influence of liquor increases on the nights of these parties. The situation leads to altercations with other motorists.
Another worrying allegation is that some party-goers invite women into the hostel.
Some are so young that they arrive in their school uniforms.
The resident showed the Herald complaints from other people in the neighbourhood.
He said, while those living nearest to the single quarters have complained in the past, the situation is now so out of hand that they now fear victimisation.

When the Herald visited the single quarters on 20 June, the remains of some fires could still be seen in the front garden of the complex.
The Herald contacted Sibanye-Stillwater about the issue. The executive vice president of Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs, Mr James Wellsted, responded just after the newspaper went to print last week.
“We have received similar enquiries and are following up. The single quarters are situated in town (Carletonville) and are similar to a block of flats (not a hostel).
“The building is not access-controlled so we are aware that non-residents do come and could make a nuisance of themselves in the outside open spaces; this is being reported to SAPS.
“In the interim, our security (SSWPS) will assist when these incidents are reported.
“We will also ensure that every resident is aware of the house rules before this weekend – they all receive these when signing the lease agreement.
“We set up an anonymous contact number to report any wrongdoing as it does appear that some residents are reluctant to speak up due to intimidation concerns,” says Wellsted.

The residents made fire in the front garden.
