Watch out on R500

Motorists should be cautious when driving on the R500 between Carletonville and the N14.

There are currently many deep potholes on various parts of this road. They start just outside the town and continue beyond Graca’s Candles.
One of our residents, Ms Judy Rossouw, who drives on this road daily, is very concerned about the state of this road.
“Sanral (the national roads agency) started filling some of the potholes near Graca’s Candles last week. However, they only fixed a few and then stopped,” she complains.
There are so many potholes that people from the informal areas near Rooipoort have started filling them with sand. Since the start of the school holidays, several schoolboys have taken over the task.
By Monday, several schoolboys stood on the sides of the road and sometimes even in the road, asking for donations from grateful motorists. This help has led to another problem, however.
There is a hole more than a metre deep on the side of the road, about 100 metres before the first turn-off to Ventersdorp.
It is unclear whether a small sinkhole is forming or whether the boys or other residents had dug the hole open when fixing the potholes. Rossouw fears that if it is not currently a sinkhole, it could be- come one at the start of the rainy season.
Some drivers, especially those with trucks, often drive on the side of the road to avoid potholes, and their wheels could get stuck in the hole, leading to accidents.
Although the Herald sent Sanral questions, asking when the holes would be fixed, the publication received no feedback.
