Fatal rockfall at Blyvoor Gold Mine kills one worker and injures 20 others

Tragic incident at Blyvoor this morning.

Emergency services have just left Blyvoor Gold mine where several people were injured, one of them fatally, in a rockfall this morning.

According to Gauteng’s Emergency Medical Services manager of emergency medical services (EMS) in the West Rand District, Jurgens Bence, members of this ambulance service as well as ER24 attended to an incident at Blyvoor Gold at approximately 09:40 this morning.

One of the injured mineworkers, unfortunately, died as a result of his injuries.

Two other mineworkers were seriously injured while another 12 have serious injuries but are in a stable condition.

Another six mineworkers who had less serious injuries were also evacuated from the scene. All were taken to Fountain Private Hospital.

As far as could be determined, all the workers were injured in a rockfall at the mine.

According to Volcanodiscovery.com an earthquake that measured 3.2 on the Richter Scale took place at 09:38 this morning. The light earthquake took place 16 km southwest of Carletonville, which places it in the area of the affected mine.
