Fochville man dies in veld fire as authorities urge urgent fire safety compliance

Learn more about this preventable tragedy and the fire precautions every resident must follow.

Fochville – The tragic death of Pieter Slabbert (58), a well-known plumber and handyman from the Fochville area, has sent shockwaves through the community and brought urgent focus to the growing threat of uncontrolled veld fires in Merafong.

Slabbert was caught in a fast-moving veld fire on the afternoon of Friday, 20 June, while working at the Crocodilian Hotel and Restaurant outside Fochville. The blaze, driven by strong winds, started near Greenspark shortly after 14:00 and raced through approximately five kilometres of farmland and open veld, reaching the area where he was last seen. He died at around 16:00.

His devastated family says they still have no clear answers about the exact circumstances of his death. “We honestly don’t know what happened,” said his brother, Gideon Slabbert. “It’s a huge shock. Pieter was a humble man who kept to himself. We’re going to miss him deeply.”

According to Gideon, he and his wife were on the opposite side of a nearby stream at the time, protecting their own property from the fire. They were unaware that Pieter had been caught in its path. His body was found after the flames were brought under control, and preliminary accounts suggest he may have died of a heart attack after suffering burns to his arm and clothing.

A wake-up call as fire season heats up

Slabbert’s death comes as authorities issue urgent warnings to all landowners and residents in the Merafong area about the dangers of veld fires during the dry winter months.

Under the amended National Veld and Forest Fire Act (April 2024), all landowners are now legally obligated to take active measures to prevent and manage fires on their properties. Negligence is punishable by heavy fines, jail time, and in extreme cases, civil lawsuits if lives or property are lost.

Mandatory fire safety measures:

  • Firebreaks: Ensure well-maintained firebreaks are in place along property boundaries.

  • Fuel reduction: Regularly clear dry vegetation, brush, and flammable debris.

  • Permits: Secure proper burn permits before conducting any controlled burns.

  • Communication: Inform your neighbours and local Fire Protection Association (FPA) before burning.

  • Fire danger days: Avoid any open flames or burning activities during high fire risk days, as forecast by local weather services.

Even burning garden waste without permission is illegal.

A preventable tragedy

While the exact cause of the fire that claimed Slabbert’s life is still under investigation, local fire officials say this tragedy highlights what can happen when veld fires are underestimated or poorly managed.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder that veld fires don’t just destroy vegetation—they take lives,” said the Fire Protection Association Officer of the West Rand District Municipality, Aletta du Preez. “Fire safety is not optional. It’s a legal and moral responsibility.”

As winter dryness and wind increase across the region, residents are urged to stay alert, compliant, and ready to act. Fires can move faster than expected, leaving little time for escape.
