Merafong Business Chamber 2 protests over lack of opportunities for local SMMEs
Frustrated members of the Merafong Business Chamber 2 gathered outside the municipal offices in Carletonville, accusing the Merafong City Local Municipality of sidelining local SMMEs from key projects such as the Elijah Barayi Mega Housing Complex and other government contracts.
Members of a local business organisation and some other upset residents recently again showed their unhappiness with the way that the Merafong City Local Municipality treats local businesspeople.
The members of the Merafong Business Chamber 2 (MBC2) gathered outside the main municipal building in Halite Street to hand over a grievance letter to representatives of the municipality’s Local and Economic Development (LED) Department.
According to MBC2’s chairperson Sibusiso Nhlapo, this department continues to exclude the majority of local businesses from its actions.
Although the MBC2 already marched to the municipality in March 2025, nothing fruitful came from this action.
The majority of local SMME’s (Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises) do not work on the area’s two biggest government contracts, conctruction at the Elijah Barayi mega housing complex and the construction of the new Rotara School just outside Carletonville.
Local companies also do not benefit from, amongst other projects, security work to guard the old Carletonville Police Station.
The local businesspeople also complained that they don’t get work at the local mines due to what they label as “red tape. The MBC2 requested an urgent meeting with the municipality.
