There is help for Merafong teens in need
Teenagers must know that there are people who can help them.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Support Group (SADAG) has various resources available for teenagers who are going through a hard time.
In a tragic accident this week, an 11-year-old boy from Khutsong Ext 5 took his own life. According to the police, this incident occurred immediately after his mother had asked him to do the dishes.
According to SADAG, teen suicide is becoming more common every year in South Africa. According to this NGO’s figures, only car accidents and homicide kill more youth between the ages of 15 and 24.
In South Africa, 9% of all teen deaths are caused by suicide. The fastest growing age is young people under35, specifically female suicides, which peak between 15 and 19 years.
There is a major link between depression and suicide. Most of the time, teen depression is a passing mood. Sadness, loneliness, grief, and disappointments we all feel at times, and are normal reactions to life’s struggles. However, undiagnosed depression can lead to tragedy. Up to one-third of all suicide victims had attempted suicide previously.
Despite these sad figures, teen suicides can often be prevented if the youngsters have someone they can talk to.
Any teenager who feels that they are in a dark place can contact SADAG’s national toll-free Suicide Crisis Line at 0800 567 567. This helpline is available 24 hours a day.
Teenagers in need can also visit SADAG’s website at sadag.org for information and booklets, as well as more toll-free numbers in case they need help.
