Khutsong faces rising crime: A deep dive into latest police statistics
The newest SAPS statistics reveal significant increases and shifts in criminal activity from January to March this year.
The recent release of national crime statistics for January to March this year has cast a spotlight on the Merafong City Local Municipality, with its police stations featuring prominently in areas of concern. For the first time in years, a station within this municipality, Khutsong, has landed on the national list of top stations experiencing the most significant crime increases.
Khutsong: A troubling trend emerges
Khutsong Police Station, located within Merafong City, ranked last among the 30 police stations nationally with the biggest increases in overall crime. The report indicates a concerning rise across various categories, including serious violent crimes. Residents have seen increases in:
- Violent Crime: Murder, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, common assault, and common robbery.
- Sexual Offences: A notable increase in reported sexual offences.
- Property Crime: Malicious damage to property, business burglaries, theft out of motor vehicles, and robbery at non-residential premises.
- Commercial Crime: A rise in commercial crimes.
Interestingly, the statistics also showed increases in the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug-related crimes, and driving under the influence. While these are crime categories, their increase often reflects enhanced police activity and arrests, suggesting improved law enforcement efforts in these specific areas.
However, it’s not all grim news for Khutsong. The station reported decreases in several key crime types, including robbery with aggravating circumstances, burglary at residential properties, stock theft, other theft, shoplifting, and robbery at residential premises. Furthermore, cases of theft of motor vehicles, carjacking, and sexual offences detected by the police remained stable.
Carletonville and neighboring areas also feature
Beyond Khutsong, other towns within and around the Merafong City region also appeared on the national crime lists, highlighting broader regional challenges:
- Carletonville: This town’s police station ranked 25th nationally for robberies at non-residential premises. A total of 15 such cases were reported in the first quarter of 2025, a positive decrease of 10 cases compared to the same period in 2024.
- Potchefstroom: Just a short distance away, Potchefstroom’s police station was 28th on the national list for commercial crimes.
- Ikageng (Potchefstroom): This area saw significant challenges, ranking 5th nationally for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm cases, and 20th for both contact-related crimes and malicious damage to property.
- Vanderbijlpark: Further afield, Vanderbijlpark’s statistics painted a picture of widespread property crime issues, ranking 14th for burglaries at residential premises, 28th for robbery at residential premises, 29th for all theft not mentioned elsewhere, and 30th for overall property-related crime.
- Vereeniging: Also in the vicinity, Vereeniging was 25th nationally for burglaries at non-residential premises.
National context
While the focus remains on local impacts, it’s worth noting that Dutywa in the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape holds the unfortunate distinction of being the police station with the highest overall increase in crime across the country.
These latest statistics provide crucial insights for local authorities and communities in Merafong City and its surroundings. Understanding these trends is the first step towards developing targeted interventions and collaborative strategies to enhance safety and security for all residents.
