Carletonville hitchhiking robbery highlights safety risks for commuters
Woman robbed at gunpoint after accepting lift near 007 shopping complex as police urge caution.
An incident in Carletonville this week has served as a grim reminder of the dangers of hitchhiking.
The robbery took place on March 10 at around 07:00. A 25-year-old woman was waiting for a lift near the 007 shopping complex when a black car with three men inside pulled over.
The woman told the driver that she wanted to go to Fochville. The driver agreed but told her they needed to make a quick detour to Blyvooruitzicht first to drop off another passenger.
During the journey, the driver suddenly pulled over. The three men dragged the woman out of the vehicle and threatened her with a firearm.
The attackers stole her cellphone and bank card and forced her to give them the PIN code.
Before speeding off, the men tied the victim up and abandoned her on the side of the road.
