Oranje Street circle in Oberholzer becoming an eyesore

Litterbugs and other unsavoury characters are ruining the park for others.

Residents are worried that the park at the traffic circle on Oranje Street in Oberholzer is becoming an eyesore instead of a benefit to the community.

“Nowadays people start gathering in the park on Fridays, and they sit there and drink for the whole weekend. When they go, they just leave their rubbish behind,” an upset resident complained.

Another problem is that there are no ablution facilities at the site.

As far as could be determined, people staying in the area have taken it upon themselves to clean the park as the Merafong City Local Municipality often fails to do this timeously.

When the Herald visited the site on Monday, empty bottles were strewn around. There were also glass shards from broken bottles and empty pill boxes strewn under the trees.

To make matters worse, there is a water leak near the footpath leading over the park.

There is also a deep open manhole that will seriously injure anyone who steps in it.

Luckily, someone tried to close it. Because the manhole is square and the cover that they placed on top is round, someone can still accidentally step into two of the corners.

Although the issues were taken to the Merafong City Local Municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, no feedback was received.
