Problems at Carletonville graveyard

Some of the graves also seem to be sagging.

Residents who visit Carletonville graveyard must be aware of various issues.

When the Herald visited the facility on October 15, various holes in the fence were still not fixed.

Although security guards watch the front entrance, no one checks for unsavoury characters entering through the holes in the fence at the back of the facility. Someone has also dug a deep ditch under the fence, which can give an entry point for criminals.

The safety of graveyards in the area was highlighted when more than 200 gravestones were damaged at the Khutsong South cemetery just more than a year ago. Although the Merafong City Local Municipality closed the hole in the fence after the incident, similar problems at other graveyards in the area were not addressed.

Meanwhile, visitors to the graveyard must also look out for graves that seem to be sinking at the back of the left side of the facility.
During the Herald’s visit, some headstones seemed to be sagging.

There was also a hole between some of the graves, which could seriously injure someone if they should step in it.

Although the Herald took the issues to the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, on Monday, no feedback was received by printing time.
