Carol Wright from Glenvista said the Santa Shoebox initiative is done throughout the country, where they aim for a million boxes.
Wright is a teacher and a leader of an art group in her community which gets involved in Santa Shoebox every year.
“We are an art group in the south and our committee aims to do 3 800 boxes. At the moment, we need another minimum of 1 000 pledges,” Wright said.
She explained people interested need to visit www.santashoebox.org.za to pledge.
“You then find a child in the Alberton and south of Johannesburg area whose name you want to pledge. They will send you a label which you will stick on your box, in which you include an outfit, educational supplies, facecloth with soap and toothpaste, a packet of sweets and a toy,” she said.
You can also add extra gifts if you want to for the child you pledge to.
“We have our drop-off on the last weekend of October at The Glen Shopping Centre where you can bring your boxes anytime from Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Each box will go to a specific child at a school we are linked to. We used to visit these schools but due to Covid-19 we cannot. Now, the teachers give us the list of the children whose names go on the site, and we pledge from there.”
Wright added that if anyone wants to sponsor a box, they can get in contact with her on 063 321 0380.
