Mokebisi one step closer to title fight
Matshidiso Mokebisi is one step closer to her dream to fight for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title after she outclassed her opponent, Bonita van Jaarsveld.
She won the lightweight bout with a TKO in the fifth round at the TLB Boxing Promotions The Night of Honour and Passion, which was held at Donaldson Community Centre, Soweto, on June 26.
Mokebisi will be fighting in August for the IBF title.
She was all fired up coming out of the corner, not giving van Jaarsveld any room, and steadily built up her lead to eventually plant the devastating punch to win the fight.
“I want to thank all my supporters in the Free State. I promise I will never let them down. I don’t think there is someone here in Mzanzi in my weight division who can beat me,” said Mokebisi.
“I am still in the hands of the best trainer in South Africa, Manny Fernandez. This is my fifth fight under him and I won all five of them, two with TKOs.
“Thank you so much, coach. I wish we’d met a long time ago.”
Mokebisi fights out of the BRD Boxing Academy stable, which is situated at Turffontein Racecourse.
The 31-year-old has a record of 14 wins, five KOs, eight losses and one draw.
