Future Stars brings Turffontein to life on screen

An awards evening was held at Baseline Family Church on December 5 to honour the boys and girls who acted in the Future Stars video series project.

The Future Stars project was started in July by Themba ‘Mr Lover Man’ Mavuso, a writer and filmmaker.

According to Themba, he saw children walking around in the Turffontein area and thought to himself that he would like to occupy the children with something positive rather than becoming involved in the many dangers around the area.

“We shot the first episode of the Future Stars series that very day,” explained Themba.

He told how excited the children were about the project and soon he had more children joining in on the fun and shooting more episodes.

The Future Stars series tells the story of residents of Turffontein being terrorised by a criminal gang.

This gang, led by the charismatic General, starts with petty crimes before scaling up their criminal activities to involve weapons and robbery.

The six-part series follows the community’s response to the threat and how it is diffused. Children staying in the area portrayed all roles in the series.

At the awards ceremony, the children were honoured for their participation and individually for their specific achievements during the filming process. All this was made more exciting by having the children compete in a dancing competition.

Themba said this project was very important for him as giving children the opportunity to excel helps keep them away from the unsavoury elements of society.

The Future Stars project is not stopping here as Themba plans to launch a new phase next year. Children in the Future Stars project will learn how to trade with stock provided by the Future Stars while keeping their profits. This will help them learn valuable financial skills.
