The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level two warning of potential flooding and strong winds as SA prepares for a weekend of extreme weather.
Severe thunderstorms, localised flooding and damaging winds are expected to hit SA’s central and eastern parts. Parts of Johannesburg have an 80% chance of widespread rainfall, including severe thunderstorms with excessive lightning.
Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo can expect scattered storms, with a yellow level two alert for disruptive rainfall.
Stay dry and safe:
• Always carry an umbrella or raincoat to stay dry if you are going outside;
• Wear waterproof shoes to keep your feet dry and prevent fungal infections;
• Slippery surfaces can be dangerous, so walk carefully and avoid quick changes of direction;
• Stay indoors during heavy rain and strong winds or seek shelter from the elements;
• Avoid roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, low-lying areas and areas where water collects because they could flood unexpectedly;
• Avoid driving in heavy rain because of poor visibility, or be extra cautious.
Enjoy the rainy weather:
• Embrace the rain by listening to music, reading a book or playing board games;
• Have a movie marathon and cosy up with a blanket;
• Baking something delicious is perfect on a rainy day;
• Get creative by trying a new craft or hobby;
• Spend time with loved ones because rainy days are great for spending with family and friends.
