Daniel Rowland, accused of murder and drug possession following a 2021 shooting at Il Camino restaurant in Mulbarton, made a brief appearance at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on September 8.
The matter was postponed to September 29 after Rowland’s defence counsel, Advocate Mayat, failed to appear as he was engaged in another case in the High Court.
Magistrate Hasina Habib expressed frustration over the repeated delays, noting that the trial has been stalled since February 2024.
“We are stuck on this trial because every time it needs to continue, something else comes up. I have been patient, but next month I will be gone and I am not coming back to finish this case,” Habib said.
She added that she would be compelled to report the matter to the Judge President as a delayed case. “This matter was set down for three days. I need Advocate Mayat to appear, as I have questions for him. After October I am not coming back here. There is a need to invoke Section 342A.”
Addressing Rowland directly, Habib advised that he could consider changing his legal representative if ongoing problems persisted. She further warned that if his counsel remained unavailable, he might have to represent himself.
