A hijacked vehicle linked to a series of vehicle thefts was recovered following a high-speed chase in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to CPS Security, one of its licence plate recognition (LPR) cameras in Alberton detected a vehicle believed to be involved in vehicle thefts targeting churches in the Mondeor, Alberton, and Brackendowns policing areas.

CPS Security’s tactical response team quickly traced the vehicle. However, the suspects sped away when officers attempted to stop them, leading to a high-speed pursuit.

The chase ended in the Diepkloof area, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Despite a search, they managed to evade arrest.

Investigations confirmed that the recovered vehicle had been hijacked in the Bramley area.

Working together with the Gauteng Highway Patrol, officers searched the vehicle and recovered false number plates, car-breaking implements, reflective jackets and other tools believed to have been used in vehicle thefts.

CPS Security said the recovery highlights the important role its licence plate recognition technology plays in detecting stolen vehicles and supporting law enforcement in the fight against crime.

The company added that the successful recovery demonstrates how technology and rapid response continue to help protect communities across Gauteng.
