Katlego Maboe on finally being able to feel again

'It’s taken some time, much more time than I would’ve liked or expected of myself, to get to this point,' said Katlego Maboe.

The past year seems to have been tougher on Katlego Maboe than he has let on. Shortly after being exposed for cheating on his then-partner, Maboe went on a prolonged social media break and has slowly been making his return in recent months.

He initially indicated that he had turned his life over to Jesus after his relationship with Monique Muller publicly fell apart and impacted his career.

This past weekend, he went on a hike in Cape Town and took some time to reflect on his walk afterwards.

“It’s taken some time, much more time than I would’ve liked or expected of myself, to get to this point. A place where I could honestly smile again, feel again and laugh from the bottom of my belly. I am grateful that I am here – now,” wrote Katlego.

According to the TV presenter, he and his friend met a group of elderly ladies along their route and their energy breathed life into him.

“As they laughed and bantered amongst each other, I allowed myself to be fully immersed in their energy and embrace – each one of them feeling like a maternal figure that has once touched my life, full of love, warmth and compassion,” he added.

Katlego further marvelled at their friendship and vitality, and stated that it was something to strive toward.

Maboe had to keep a low profile late last year after he was exposed for cheating on his former partner and the mother of his child, Monique Muller.

Muller also alleged that Maboe had gotten physical with her and she took the matter to court. The pair have since been involved in a bitter battle at family court.

Prior to his most recent post, Maboe last posted on Instagram and Twitter in October 2020, when he admitted to cheating on Muller.

“I was unfaithful to my partner during a very important time of our lives – an act I regret to this day. We are currently undergoing an unfortunate and painful separation which is being resolved through legal proceedings. As you can imagine, separations are quite a difficult thing to deal with, especially with a child involved,” wrote Maboe.

He also denied abusing Muller, before stating that he would be handling his separation privately from that moment onwards.

He was also recently nominated at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) in the best presenter category.

His nomination was later rescinded by the awards’ organisers, after backlash from activists and ordinary South Africans who were concerned that he was being celebrated amid abuse allegations.

According to a report by IOL, Katlego has since filed a lawsuit seeking compensation of R1 million.

The publication cites a Netwerk24 article that reported Maboe sent a legal letter of demand to Muller, her brother, Sabrina Walters, the founder of Women for Change, and Janet van Eeden, chairperson of the judges for the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Saftas.

The demand was for the four parties to apologise and retract statements made against him, as well as R1 million from each in compensation for damages.

In response to the reports, Muller called her former partner’s latest actions a form of bullying. She also indicated that she is not pleased that Netwerk24 did not ask her for comment.

“Please help me understand how I am supposed to comment on an attorney’s letter that the attorney in question has sent to journalists [?] But forgot to sen[d] it to me too.

“The previous attorney’s bullying tactics, harassment and unethical behaviour already got her in serious trouble and here we go again (sic),” she wrote.
