Soap awards suffer another blow

The inaugural Royalty Soapie Awards (RSA) suffered yet another blow over the weekend with the release of a statement announcing that it has been postponed until next year.

Hailed as the first ever South African awards ceremony exclusively for soap operas, the RSAs are the brainchild of ‘Generations’ actress Winnie Modisa, who has unfortunately failed to deliver on grandiose claims made earlier this year when it was launched.

The event was put in a bad light last week when e.tv revealed that they decided to pull soapies Rhythm City and Scandal! from the awards due to a severe lack of information and organisation. It was also snubbed by M-Net, who kept Inkaba and Zabalaza out of categories.

Sent out at midnight on Saturday, the RSA statement reads: “South Africa’s inaugural awards ceremony focusing on television soap opera will now take place in the first quarter of 2014.”

Royalty Soapie Awards project director Sindile Xulu said, “To give maximum value to all our partners and sponsors we felt it was important that as a new project, the event must have the desired impact.

“The first quarter of the year is an ideal time and fairly uncluttered from an entertainment point of view and it is a fantastic time to visit Durban as it falls outside of the peak holiday season.”

The second announcement of finalists in the acting categories will be made on 23 October and voting lines for the Most Popular Soapie open on 2 November.

A date for the opening of ticket sales for the event will be announced in the near future.
