A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Primrose SAPS after his alleged hijacking story did not add up.
Const Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police, said the driver of a company was given instructions not to stop anywhere to deliver goods until he went for a police escort at the police station.
“The suspect did not follow instructions and decided to deliver the goods without a police escort,” said Maome.
Maome also informed the GCN that due to the series of hijackings in the area, the police had made an agreement with the company to escort their drivers when they would make deliveries in the area.
“The driver alleged that he was hijacked on Rietfontein Road by two men who pointed a firearm at him and demanded the car keys.
“The driver also alleged that before the hijackers left, they searched him and his crew and took their cellphones,” added Maome.
“We have never experienced any hijackings since we started escorting the company drivers during their deliveries in the area.
“It is only until recently when the driver decided not to come to the station.
“As the police, we strongly believe that there has been foul play on the part of the company driver,” said Maome.
The vehicle was later recovered in Katlehong with the goods worth R100 000 missing.
Further investigations are underway.
