Nine people rescued from wreckage

Ekurhuleni emergency services to the rescue.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services rescue teams from Hlahatsi, Wadeville and Alberton fire stations came to the rescue of nine people recently.

The nine people who were rescued from the wreckage caused by an accident involving a tipper truck and a private hatchback vehicle all sustained critical injuries.

Another two occupants from the vehicle were certified dead on scene, both occupants were female.

Seven of the critically injured were transported, by road, to different hospitals, respectively while one was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

The last person to be rescued from the wreckage was the truck driver.

Emergency services battled for an hour to free him from the wreckage as he was trapped inside the driver`s cab, which had squashed around his body, once freed he was also airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

It is alleged that both the tipper truck and the vehicle were driving in the same direction on the N3 at the time of the accident.

The collision happened just after the Alrode off-ramp, and resulted in both the vehicle and the truck plunging through the steel road barrier and landing next to Masakhane Road that leads into Katlehong.

The emergency services closed one lane on the N3 south bound highway to traffic leaving only one open, whilst Masakhane Road was totally closed to traffic for the duration of the rescue for the safety of the emergency teams and the injured.
