In celebration of great choral music and to honour the late OR Tambo, the metro will host the Ekurhuleni Metro Pot Choral Festival.
The festival will be held in Carnival City’s Big Top Arena, on October 19.
The top 10 choirs will battle it out for first place, with the opportunity to win the grand prize of R250 000, the biggest prize ever offered for a choral competition in South Africa.
South Africa’s top choirs selected to take part in the musical battle include Voices of the Nation, Gauteng Choristers, Kopano Chorus, Mathews Singers, Transnet Port Terminal Choir, Belcanto Voices, Heavenly Voices, SA Singers, Clermont Community Choir and African Chorus.
The audience will have an opportunity to vote for their favourite choir.
MTN will be the service provider responsible for the votes and will provide a number on the day, to be used for voting, while auditors will be on hand to count the votes.
The choir with most votes will be crowded the winner and, in addition to winning the R250 000 prize money, will win an OR Tambo Award.
The Big Top Arena is expected to host a choral and classical music audience from Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, as well as plenty of local choral music lovers.
To bring a bit more flavour to the night’s proceedings, there will be performances by Afro Tenors, Cenastra Male Choir, Tembisa High School, Injula Yomculo Choir, Fumana High School and the Mbizana Village School Choir.
Tickets can be purchased from Computicket, on www.computicket.com, or at Carnival City.
