Class of 2013 celebrates

Joy as matrics collect their results.

Matric pupils throughout the country celebrated the release of the 2013 matric results, last Tuesday.

Germiston students flocked to schools around the city to collect their certificates in order to start planning their futures.

The GCN chatted to some of the city’s school principals to find out how their schools fared.

Dries du Preez, the principal of Hoërskool Elspark, said: “I am very happy with the results.

“Our overall symbols were up and the teachers did a good job with the matric students.”

The school had a 96 per cent pass rate from its 130 matric students.

Between them they achieved 54 distinctions.

The top student from Hoërskool Elspark was Samantha Rudman, with three distinctions.

Dawnview High recorded a 94 per cent pass rate from its 150 full-time and one part-time students.

The school got 43 distinctions.

Their top achievers were Mokoena Moloto, Amanda Mlambo and Khensani Mthetho, each with three distinctions.

Principal Moeketsie Kolokoto said: “I am delighted with the results, especially with Mokoena’s results, because she was headgirl and proved a great success in her studies, as well.”

A 92 per cent pass rate was recorded by Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston.

The school had 120 matric pupils and between them they achieved 30 distinctions.

Principal Retha du Toit told the GCN that she was happy with the school’s results.

The top pupils at the school were Jana-Mari Bloem with five distinctions, and Zande Bann with four distinctions.

Hoërskool Primrose High achieved a 91 per cent pass rate from its 134 pupils.

The pupils achieved 33 distinctions between them.

The top pupil was Tafadzna Moyo, with three distinctions.

The School of Achievement’s principal, Tinus du Preez, said they had 40 matric students in 2013.

“For the first time in 10 years we had one failure; the rest of our pupils did very well,” he said.

“We had 15 distinctions overall.”

The school’s top achiever was Wade Cothill, with three distinctions.

“Remember that the School of Achievement is a special school and our pupils are learning disabled.

“They are all struggling academically and the fact that they did so well should never be downplayed,” du Preez said.

“I congratulate the district on the overall results in the district and the other schools, especially the schools that achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.”
