Children flocked to schools throughout the city on Wednesday, with happy smiles and a will to learn.
The 2014 academic year has got off to a good start in Germiston schools, with no major problems being reported.
Pupils were already working from day one and principals are looking forward to a fruitful, hard-working year ahead.
Adriaan Fourie, the principal of Laerskool Delville said: “We got off to a wonderful start and it couldn’t have gone any better.
“We planned well beforehand and experienced a good enrolment this year.”
Laerskool Die President also got off to a good start and they started their first English Grade One class at the school, enrolling 30 new pupils.
Principal of Laerskool Germiston André Bosch said they had had a relatively calm start to the year, although they were still enrolling some children sent to them by the education department.
Riaan Pretorius, the deputy principal of Laerskool Elspark, told the GCN that the school had been organised and this helped them get off to a great start and everything was running smoothly.
Laerskool Oosterkruin also got off to a flying start, with a lot of new enrolments.
Assumption Convent School’s principal, Neville Workman, said that the school (both primary and high school) was already working well and had also started with extra-mural activities.
“Things are going well.
“It always takes a while to establish a routine, but if you plan in advance things go smoothly,” he said.
St Catherine’s School (primary and high school) also experienced no problems, with everyone happy and working well.
Gail du Preez, the principal of Dinwiddie Primary told the GCN that everything was in order and going well.
Germiston South Primary’s principal Lanette Fouché said, “This has been one of the best years for us.
“We had no problems with our Grade R’s or Ones and the school is ready for a year of hard work with all staff at school and everything set to go.”
Marius Lotz from Primrose Primary School said that everything was under control although it had been a bit hectic.
The pupils were already working well.
Marianna Odendaal, the principal of Sunnyridge Primary said everything went smoothly and they didn’t have any children crying or major upsets.
Les O’Neil from Wychwood Primary echoed her sentiments.
Hoërskool Primrose got off to an excellent start according to principal Arrie Olivier.
“We have 1 000 children in the school, enough teachers and we are on the right track for a good year,” he said.
Dries du Preez, principal of Hoërskool Elspark, and Marius Mills, principal of Hoërskool Goudrif, both said their schools had started the year well, with no problems.
Germiston High’s principal André Beukes said that everything had gone smoothly and everyone was already hard at work and learning.
Marie-Louise Louw, the deputy principal of Dinwiddie High, said that everything was going according to plan and working well.
So, it looks like Germiston can look forward to a good academic year, with all schools operating smoothly.
