Taking back the streets

Local crime forum puts in a huge effort to eradicate crime.

The Primrose Sector Two Crime Forum is determined to chase criminals off the streets.

“Seventy of our residents are patrolling the streets at night, on a rotation basis, and this has reduced the crime at night,” said Wendy Morgan, chairman of Sector Two.

“But during the day, residents who are at home need to be extra aware, watch their neighbours’ homes and watch for anything that does not look right.”

Morgan told the GCN that the patrollers are using radios to communicate with each other and that they are hoping to get the system working so well that they will be able to be in contact with the SAPS soon, as well.

“Unfortunately, there is always a cost involved with any system.

“Due to poor signal in most of the area, a repeater has to be used at a cost of R2 500 per month.

“We need funds,” Morgan said.

“Not everyone is able to patrol, but you can still play a role in our safety, by making a donation.”

For the sector’s banking details contact Morgan on 072 963 9675.

“We are asking for each household to donate R100 to the crime forum, and this can be used to pay for the repeater each month.

“We are also appealing to the businesses in our area to get involved and donate towards this project,” she said.

Within the next month or so, radios will be available to members of the community at their own cost, so that the sector can start communicating with each other.

“At this stage radios are available only to the patrollers.

“Some of the patrollers cannot afford to purchase their own radios, so a huge thank you to Sheryl Thompson and the staff from Chas Everitt, who donated four radios for the patrollers to use,” Morgan said.

“Also, a thank you to Cherrywood Estates, who donated the boards with the Primrose Sector Two Crime Forum details to be put up on the gates of homes, showing that we are standing together against crime.

“These boards are sold to raise funds and are available from me.”

Sector Two will be holding its AGM on February 16, at 6.30pm, at Sunnyridge Primary School.

A committee needs to be elected.

Morgan can be contacted if you would like to join the existing committee, or to volunteer your help with fund-raising, the printing of flyers, company donations or any ideas on keeping the residents safe.

The Sector Two patrollers have noticed some security issues in the sector:

  • Security gates left open.
  • Gates to properties left open.
  • Inadequate lighting.
  • Garages left open and unsecured.

Morgan urged residents not to be complacent and to maintain security measures at their homes.

Residents are also advised to make sure their house numbers are clearly visible on their walls or fences.

“They are not easy to see on the floor and if your home is clearly numbered this will make it easier to find in an emergency situation,” she said.

“Please note that the CPF is not offering the service of painting numbers for you, you need to do this yourselves.”
