Remembering OR Tambo

The metro is set to celebrate the life and accomplishments of struggle stalwart OR Tambo, this October.

The metro is a buzz of activity at it gears up to commemorate and celebrate late struggle stalwart OR Tambo.

The struggle icon would have celebrated his 99th birthday on October 27. With this in mind, the metro has dubbed October OR Tambo Month and given it the theme “Celebrating the life, times and legacy of O.R Tambo, 99 years and counting towards the centenary”, in order to keep his legacy alive.

The month-long commemorative programme will begin on Saturday, October 15, with the harmonious sounds of the Choral Male Choirs Extravaganza, at the H.H Ngakane Community Hall, in KwaThema.

This will be followed by a soulful choral music competition, which will see an array of choirs from across the metro exhibiting their talents at the Thokoza Auditorium, on Saturday, October 22.

Tambo was known for his flair as a music composer, song arranger, skilful producer and choir director.

On October 21-24, the metro will host school debates and workshops at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct, in Wattville, Benoni.

The debates will ensure that Tambo’s ideals are imparted to the younger generations.

On Thursday, October 27, President Jacob Zuma will lead a wreath-laying ceremony, to pay his respects to Adelaide and OR Tambo, whose grave can be found at the Tamboville Cemetery, in Wattville.

An operatic production depicting the life of Tambo will be showcased at the Springs Theatre on Friday, October 28, to promote classical music as an art form that was so dear to the struggle icon.

Furthermore, the metro will host the OR Tambo Youth Games at the Wattville Stadium, on Saturday, October 29.

The day’s activities will include soccer, aerobics and a 6km fun walk around the Tambo Memorial.

Celebrations will come to an end on Sunday, October 30, with a jazz session at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct.
