New scam hits town
According to the information at the OCJ’s disposal, it is alleged that the candidates who apply to take part in this training are required to pay a fee upfront, though the training never materialises.
The Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) wishes to alert members of the public of a suspected fraudulent training scheme purporting to be endorsed by the South African Judiciary.
The suspected scheme is advertised as “Candidate Attorney Practical Training” and lists the High Court as a venue for this training. The adverts also make use of an image of the Palace of Justice in an attempt to give the impression that the programme is endorsed by the South African Judiciary.
According to the information at the OCJ’s disposal, it is alleged that the candidates who apply to take part in this training are required to pay a fee upfront, though the training never materialises.
The OCJ encourages those who have fallen victim to the alleged fraud to report the matter to the South African Police Service. In addition, members of the public are urged to contact the Court Manager or the Chief Registrar of the High Court concerned to ascertain the legitimacy of any advertisement that purports to be issued/endorsed by the Judiciary before signing up.
