Primrose police closed down two illegal taverns and arrested two suspects, aged 27 and 31 years old respectively, during an operation in the Marathon informal settlement, last weekend.
The accused were charged with selling liquor without a licence after they failed to show police their liquor licences during a search of each of their taverns.

“Police seized a large amount of alcohol from each of the taverns which were taken to the Primrose Police Station.
“The alcohol will be destroyed at a later stage,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
One of the suspects paid an admission of guilt fine and was released with a warning while the other remained in custody pending his appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.
“We are warning the community of Primrose’s informal settlements to refrain from selling liquor without a valid license as we will keep on conducting similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol,” said Maome.
