Police crackdown on drug abuse

Primrose police apprehend 13 suspects for possession of drugs and dagga in Primrose.

Substance abuse continues to be a challenge for the Primrose police.

In an effort to curb the problem, the Primrose police recently hosted a foot patrol operation in the Makause informal settlement.

During the operation, 13 suspects, aged between 24 and 46 years old, were arrested for the possession of drugs and dagga.

The accused were taken to the Primrose Police Station following their arrest.

“We want to remind the community that dagga is still regarded as a drug.

“You cannot smoke dagga like you smoke a cigarette,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The police believe that substance abuse is a contributing factor in murders, domestic violence cases, assaults and even robberies in the area.

“Our community needs to take a stand against substance abuse,” said Maome.

The suspects have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where some paid admission of guilt fines and were released on a warning while others had their cases postponed for trial.
